Myles Young (b. 1992) is an emerging Sydney-based artist. He has exhibited Australia-wide in many solo and group exhibitions at established galleries and art fairs. The artist brings with him an exceptional list of accolades, having been a finalist in multiple prizes such as the Paddington Art Prize, Waverley Art Prize, Mosman Art Prize, winning the 2020 Macquarie Emerging Artist Prize and has twice been shortlisted for the prestigious Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship. On the back of multiple sell out shows, Young’s work has been featured in Art Collector magazine and is housed in the Macquarie Group Collection and in numerous private collections across Australia and abroad.

He is also represented by Olsen Gallery in Sydney. “I like to create imagined landscapes. I create studies via ink drawings and digital sketching then interpret them while I’m painting, allowing for mistakes and intuitive mark making. The painting itself begins with acrylic, blocking in imagined plants, leaves, sky, mud, grass and importantly, water and is then finished with bold oil paint. The interest in the landscape started for me as I matured and reflected on invitations to walk through local forests when I was younger, which I I would often decline, only to regret it later. Now living in a city, the works are trying to detail all the things I may have missed on those walks. I am fond of creating places that are other-worldly and aim to convince my audience to peer in. The works are filled with personal anecdotes about my life mixed with imagined scenes celebrating the natural world. The scope for these scenes is endless and very alluring.The works are of no fixed place, a central idea is that they are slightly mystical and are depicting a place that is just over the next hill, or hidden behind a tree or bush. I aim for them to feel secret, to display all that which happens in nature that goes unseen, therefore accurate depictions are not my focus.In these paintings, time itself is a material, layered again and again, depicting an image like a long exposure, capturing everything at once. Evidence of movement Is essential. They are in constant state of growth or flux, as nature is anything but still.
