ABU DHABI’S SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUND ACQUIRES MINORITY STAKE IN SOTHEBY’S
Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, ADQ, has agreed to acquire a minority stake in Sotheby’s, investing nearly $1 billion. The investment is part of a combined $1 billion infusion, with the majority coming from ADQ, and additional capital from Sotheby’s owner, telecom billionaire Patrick Drahi. Drahi will remain the majority shareholder.
The investment will fund Sotheby’s ambitious growth plans, including expanding its presence in the Middle East as Abu Dhabi enhances its cultural offerings. Sotheby’s CEO, Charles Stewart, highlighted that the capital will accelerate the auction house’s strategic initiatives and commitment to innovation in the art and luxury markets.

World-renowned street artist Banksy concluded a nine-day series of animal-themed artworks across London, ending with a gorilla lifting a shutter at London Zoo. RICHARD HEDREEN DONATES $300 MILLION ART COLLECTION TO SEATTLE UNIVERSITY
Richard Hedreen, alongside his late wife Betty, has donated their $300 million art collection to Seattle University, marking the largest art donation to a U.S. university. The collection, which began as a quest for home decor, grew into one of the most esteemed private collections in the country, featuring works from artists like Titian, Lucian Freud, and Amy Sherald.
Following Betty's passing in 2022, Richard chose to honor her memory by gifting the collection to her alma mater. The donation includes $25 million to establish the Seattle University Museum of Art. Richard views the university as the perfect custodian for their collection, aligning with the Jesuit mission of education and reflection.
The Hedreens’ collection will serve as the foundation of a teaching museum, enriching Seattle's cultural landscape and ensuring that the artworks continue to inspire future generations.

HOUSTON’S ROTHKO CHAPEL CLOSES INDEFINITELY AFTER HURRICANE DAMAGE
The Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas, has closed indefinitely after sustaining significant damage from Hurricane Beryl. The storm caused leaks that damaged parts of the ceiling, walls, and three of the 14 iconic murals by Mark Rothko. The full extent of the damage and repair costs are still being assessed, with Whitten & Proctor Fine Art Conservation leading the evaluation.Executive Director David Leslie emphasized the Chapel's commitment to restoring the building and its artworks, ensuring the site's cultural and spiritual mission continues. The Chapel, renowned for its Rothko paintings, serves as a space for contemplation at the intersection of art, spirituality, and human rights.
Commissioned in 1964 by Dominique and John de Menil, the Chapel opened in 1971 and has since become a significant cultural landmark, hosting figures like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama. The closure comes as Houston recovers from the earliest-ever Category 5 storm in the Atlantic basin.
