‘ART HAS GIVEN ME LONGEVITY’: LIM TZE PENG, 103, EBULLIENT ABOUT NATIONAL GALLERY SOLO EXHIBITION

Lim Tze Peng discusses his first major institutional show locally since 2003 and how painting continues to be an integral aspect of his life, into his later years. Showcasing works from 1946 to 2023, Becoming Lim Tze Peng is the artist’s first solo exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore. He takes us through his childhood, from extracting oil from coconuts to sell to turning to Chinese ink painting under the mentorship of his teachers at the time. Within the exhibition, these Chinese ink works are showcased alongside his lesser-known oil paintings of Singapore, depicted through a nostalgic lens; scenes of hawkers, mosques, and wayang stages. In his opinion, “to make a good painting, the most important thing is to sketch from life and nature.” Although he is unable to venture out to paint as much anymore, in the words of Ms Lam, a curator at the National Gallery Singapore, “he has created his own visual dictionary.” Overall, Lim Tze Peng’s exhibition is a celebration both of his life and Singapore’s culture and history.
The exhibition will run from October 25 to March 23, 2025

The 19th edition of Contemporary Instanbul is running from October 24 – 27 this year, featuring 50 galleries from 14 countries. This year has been significant for the fair due to the even split between the number of Turkish and international galleries. While the international flair was a more significant aspect of the fair this year, there was still a focus on celebrating Turkish artists, both up and coming and established. Galleries included Pi Artworks, Anna Laudel, and C24 Gallery. In addition, there are further plans for the growth of Contemporary Istanbul, building its program alongside the fair. This year this included a guest country program that spotlights Spain and Spanish-speaking countries, as well as Latin American exhibitors. Overall, the fair was a dynamic celebration of both Turkish artists alongside international names.

Running from October 26 until December 7, SVA Galleries is presenting Plasticulture: The Rise of Sustainable Practices with Polymer at their SVA Chelsea Gallery. Exhibiting works by 15 artists from Project Vortex, the aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness around sustainability and encourage sustainable practices. Project Vortex is an artistic collective that experiments and innovates with plastic debris, founded by Aurora Robson. Intersecting the artistic and scientific fields, the exhibition focuses on plastic use and rethinking the use of materials often discarded as refuse. In addition, the exhibition brings to light questions surrounding technological development and the waste created by this. For example, Leticia Bajuyo’s piece consists of a shimmering wall of compact discs that serve as a reminder of outdated media formats. Robson shares that, “this exhibition reflects a variety of methods in which artists are using their visionary skills to envision and create a more sustainable future and embracing the archival integrity of plastic debris in a way that it becomes an asset rather than a problem.”
